Open Jar Collective pops-up at the Glad Cafe

In July the Open Jar Collective, a new group of artists and designers including myself and previous collaborator Clem Sandison had it’s first outing with a pop-up restaurant at the Glad Cafe in Glasgow’s southside, themed on food and the city.

Open Jar Collective is a group of socially engaged artists and designers operating within co-operative principles, the core members of which are myself, Clem Sandison, Daniele Sambo, Hannah Brackston and Emily Chappell. Through active and creative community engagement, our work strives to empower people to take part in the growing debate about the future of our local and global food systems. The team was joined for the event by artist Luke Collins.

The event at the Glad Cafe was a six course taster meal and each course explored personal, social or environmental issues around food, the whole meal endeavouring to be as local as possible. The evening began with a selection of breads made with sourdough cultures from across the city and the personal stories of bread making from each contributor. We went to to explore issues of waste with a soup salvaged just before it went to the waste bin. The main course was a fish, an obvious choice, given the river at the heart of this particular city, though it is no longer a source of food. It was accompanied by a salad sourced entirely from the local park, both foraged and cultivated. Reflecting the social sites of food in the city, specifically around the subways lines, the grub crawl was a gumbo bringing together the international flavours of the city. To finish off we served a victoria sponge, made from a recipe passed down through Clem’s family and accompanied by a presentation looking at how far each ingredient had travelled and the layers of history of the sugar trade in Glasgow.

We had a great evening and everyone enjoyed the mix of great food, discussion and new perspectives on food and the city.
